Removable Appliances
Removable appliances are used  in  active orthodontic treatment as an adjunct to fixed appliance therapy. In our office removable appliances are mainly used in combination with headgear in Non Extraction treatment  to move the side teeth backwards in order to make space to align the front teeth. These appliances are made from acrylic with stainless steel springs to move the teeth .They are worn full time and in combination with headgear  which is worn at night.

Retainers can also be removable.

Headgear

Standard Headgear usually  comes in three parts , an intra oral  bow, an extra oral  headcap and a safety strap. A stainless steel bow (Kloehn Bow) is fitted to the upper molar teeth. This also has an outer bow which is attached to a headcap with elastics that apply traction to the upper molar teeth. This Extra Oral Traction  is applied for 10 -12 hours a day and in combination with an upper removable appliance which is worn for 24 hours a day. This combination facilitates Non Extraction  treatment by moving the side teeth back which corrects their position and in turn makes space for the crowded or prominent front teeth. This method of treatment requires excellent cooperation. During headgear wear the safety strap is always worn  and avoidance of physical contact with other children is recommended. Bed time wear is safest.

Reverse headgear may also be worn which helps to bring the back teeth  or upper jaw forward.
